“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)
We all know this verse, but let’s be honest: giving thanks is easy when the sun is shining and the paycheck hits. It’s much harder when you’re facing a personal drought, relationship trouble, or job dissatisfaction.
Thanksgiving is God’s will for believers, not just in good times but in every situation. Why? Because giving thanks is fundamentally a matter of perspective, not circumstances.
The Vision Check
Life’s difficulties and blessings are constant; how we view them determines our attitude. The Bible teaches that the eye is the lamp of the body, and a good perspective fills us with light (Matthew 6:22-23). If you want to maintain joy and peace, you have to choose the right way to look at things.
I learned this truth firsthand during a mission trip to Honduras. One night in Santa Rosa de Copán, I was ready for sleep, but I was worried. I was talking with Brother Charlie Winner about the significant material needs we saw in the rural communities. I felt this heavy guilt as a foreigner.
Then, I had an epiphany: it was all about perspective.
While I saw material lack, the spiritual richness demonstrated by these children far exceeded any fleeting happiness that my circumstances could provide. From their perspective, the laughter, smiles, and competitiveness of a simple game of marbles were not less fulfilling than anything a high-tech gaming system could offer. They were genuinely pleased and spiritually prosperous.
The Faith-Filled Eye
That experience showed me that we must choose to look on the bright side and maintain faith-filled eyes. Like Joseph, who was sold into slavery, we must trust that God can turn evil intentions into blessings and trust His sovereign plan. We can’t let comparison and discontent lead to ingratitude.
Thanksgiving is an expression of faith. It is believing God will act on your behalf, even when you can’t see it. It strengthens your faith and brings a peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7).
Choose today to focus on God’s blessings rather than your shortcomings. You are commanded to give thanks in all circumstances, not for all circumstances. That choice changes everything.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
I confess my eyes often focus on my shortcomings and life’s difficulties. Help me correct my perspective. I choose today to give thanks in all circumstances because I trust You are at work. Fill my perspective with Your light, that I may maintain joy and peace.
